New Moon in Aquarius: Radical Truth

The new moon in 1 °32’ Aquarius becomes exact on January 21st at 2:53 p.m. CST. New pathways emerge as we shed old conditioning and step out into more of our authentic nature. We embark upon a new cycle that brings radical honesty and acceptance, enabling us to embrace our eccentricities so we may surrender our own attachment to individualization and open as a channel to receive and embody our own unique gifts.

This New Moon is the second of four Super New Moons in a row. Super moons occur when the moon is full or new at its closest distance to Earth. They produce higher gravitational and electromagnetic forces, and therefore have a far greater impact on our physical, mental and emotional bodies.

Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius, comes to a halt to station direction at 15 degrees of Taurus on Jan. 22nd ending its 5-month retrograde phase 26 hours after the Super New Moon becomes exact.

This new moon plants the seeds for profound transformation and sacred vision. We defy convention to vision a new relationship paradigm and anchor into our authentic soul’s expression. This is a spectacular moment to break away from narratives that no longer serve or resonate with us.

Aquarius as an Archetype

Aquarius represents the archetype of the reformer who aims to illuminate society with innovative solutions and higher perspectives that benefit humankind. It holds the ability to intuitively perceive patterns and situations unclouded by emotions and connect to channel spirit from a higher plane. Aquarius has exceptional awareness of self and of others.  With strong vision, heightened intellect and an independent spirit it embodies the ability to go against the grain. Aquarius often represents the whistle blower who was destined to call out the incongruences and shadow of the cultural to reveal higher truth.

Aquarius is strongly associated with the orphan archetype who explores the relationship to belonging. This is the part of ourselves that stands apart from the group, yet deeply desires connection. Through surrender of their own journey outside of the mainstream, they come into deeper acceptance of themselves and are able to access more of their own potential.

“We are not here to fit in, be well balanced, or provide exempla for others. We are here to be eccentric, different, perhaps strange, perhaps merely to add our small piece, our little clunky, chunky selves, to the great mosaic of being. As the gods intended, we are here to become more and more ourselves.”

James Hollis

Breaking through the conditioning of society, Aquarius holds the vision of where we are evolving and paves the way for a new world consciousness. They hold space for all members of society, embracing individual differences and connecting in common values. This is the medicine of the Aquarian age that ushers in a new standard of equality, compassion and collaboration in community.

In its highest expression Aquarius represents the threshold of individuation and the development of collective awareness: When we transcend gender, race, religion and nationality and understand we are all members of the human race. We perceive our differences and unique gifts as a vital contribution to the collective ecosystem and work in collaboration for the higher good of humanity.

The shadow of Aquarius is elitism. All humans have a genuine longing for community and to be a part of something bigger. Although we may hold steady our grand vision for the world in all manner of circumstance, when our shadow of elitism is not integrated we may only make space for those who either think like we do or who we perceive to be our enlightened while looking down on those with different views.  To truly revolutionize society and bring new consciousness to the world one has to be willing to go where they are called to serve. Though visionaries are able to decipher future trends, they often lack the ability to relate to the world around them and ground their ideas into form. Visionaries need a team to carry out their vision. To share their vision they must be able to relate to their audience. They must learn to accept and connect with others as they are and integrate their vision with heart.

Rebellion vs. Routine

Our thoughts are a component of a larger structure of patterns we’ve developed throughout the course of our lives. We have been conditioned on what to believe, think or feel. Often when we challenged this or went our own way, we were guided to stay within the structure of society.  This is not to suggest that guidelines and rules aren’t important.  A classroom of individual children where each is allowed to do as they wish all day, for example, would hardly foster an environment conducive to learning the skills necessary to function in community.  When we rebel from a place of rejecting the rules or pushing against the routine for the sake of rebellion itself, we are unable to know or lose sight of what we truly stand for.  We may choose to reject all structure, and in doing so leave behind the parts which nourish and support us. In being too fixated on the idea of rebellion itself we run the risk becoming stuck in a routine around it where rebellion becomes our identity at the cost of own intuitive connection.

This new moon guides us into new understanding around our relationship to rebellion. We break from old ways of thinking to feel into our heart for a true rebellion – one which is felt on a soul level and aligns with our values, challenging the status quo where it differs. This lunation is a call to evolve past our conditioning to embrace new routines that support our soul’s liberation and sustainable change. We reflect on how the routines in our lives are actually serving us and create new ones that support our evolving self. Our unique way of thinking is our medicine and we are called upon to go against the grain in support of our authentic soul’s expression.

“I’m just an individual who doesn’t feel that I need to have somebody qualify my work in any particular way. I’m working for me.”

David Bowie

Cosmic Weather

At the time of the new moon, Mars in Gemini and Mercury in Capricorn are no longer in their Retrograde phases. However, they are still moving slower than usual and building to their normal speed after coming to a halt on Jan 12th and 18th. This may bring special emphasis to the archetypal themes as to move to integrate the work from the retrograde phases.

The new moon is aligned with Mars, igniting our energies to engage with others. We have the ability to recognize opportunities, assert ourselves and make the most of challenges that arise.

The new moon forms an out of sign conjunction with Pluto, (still in Capricorn). This alignment offers immense transformation. We embark upon on a new path leading into unknown territory so we may uncover unconscious patterns, follow our intuitive knowing and develop trust in the mystery of life’s unfolding.

The alignment between Uranus and the North Node inspires us individually and collectively to develop a unique relationship with the physical world, one which encompasses our bodies, resources and the planet.

The alignment of Saturn and Venus in this new moon chart asks us to refresh our commitments to the structures in which our relationships flow through, and become attuned to how we may need to transform in order to embody the relationship that we desire. We take the time to reflect on our relationships and have an opportunity to integrate more of the Aquarian principles of compassion, acceptance and allowing in our space for others to be who they are and to look at the ways in which we attempt to control and bend others toward our beliefs so that we feel more secure.

The new moon aligns Ceres, Juno and Jupiter. We are reminded to explore how we can be nurturing and connected to others while remaining true to ourselves. We are guided to bring balance into our relationships with others and with the earth. Jupiter brings hope and confidence to step forward boldly and initiate needed change.

The new moon is opposite Black Moon Lilith guiding us into the part of ourselves that keeps us from evolving. This energy supports us in breaking through constraint to realize our power and true independence that is beyond the structures created by our ego and society. Whenever we give allegiance to a structure that we don’t believe in we give away our power. We recognize where power has been misused and abused so we may feel our intuitive fear and awaken to our true power. Black Moon Lilith in the sign of Leo reminds of the importance of ruling our creativity and going our own way to birth our creative projects.

This new moon is also in alignment with the asteroid Magdalena who symbolizes the energy of the divine feminine. Magdalena embodies sacred rebellion, living from our true nature and opening to miracles.

The Invitation

This new moon is a call to step into our sacred sight and to embrace our contrarian nature while at the same time shedding old world paradigms. We envision a new world based on inclusion, acceptance and collaboration.

This lunation is supporting us in not adapting to other people’s expectations and calling us to heal and embrace the uniqueness in ourselves and in others. When we learn to respect the differences in others and engage the world with our heart we align with our true nature and build more authentic relationships.

We receive new ideas and awareness around how we wish to shape the collective and who we choose to grow and evolve with. Through radical acceptance and space for individual expression we find our ultimate freedom in relationship. We must do our own inner work in order to join the new era and co-create new ways of being with one another.

This lunation brings fresh beginnings and a preview of what is to come. We are invited to break through the boxes of restraint that we’ve put our own selves in and to reconnect with the spark of life.

“The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are.”

Carl Gustav Jung
